ハーレーダビッドソンの最新モデル、ローライダーSTの2025年モデルに試乗した。最高気温35度という酷暑の中、東京・有明の湾岸エリアを起点に、東京湾をまたぐゲートブリッジなどを走った。
ローライダーはその名のとおり、低く構えたロー＆ロングなスタイルで、ドラッグレーサーのような迫力とクラシカルさを併せ持つモデル。
2022年に発表されたローライダーSTは、大型のフロントフェアリングやサイドバッグを装備し、スポーティーな走りと快適なユーティリティを両立させたモデルだ。
そのスタイリングは、1980年代に登場したスポーツツアラー「FXRT」を意識したものだ。当時は “不人気モデル”に数えられたが、近年は西海岸のカスタムシーンで、往年のFXRやFXRTをイメージした「クラブスタイル」が人気を集め、このローライダーST誕生のバックボーンとなった。
鮮やかなメタリックブルー（Blue Burst）のフェアリングとサドルバッグを備えたローライダーSTは、確かに現代に蘇ったFXRTという雰囲気だ。
もうひとつの背景は、近年、アメリカで人気を集めるレース「キング・オブ・ザ・バガーズ（King of the Baggers）」だ。
2020年に始まったこのロードレースは、サドルバッグを備えた大型クルーザーモデル＝「バガー」で競われるユニークなカテゴリーで、とくに西海岸で熱狂的な人気を博している。
重厚なツーリングバイクがフルバンクでサーキットを駆け抜ける姿は圧巻で、スポーティなバガースタイルを支持する潮流を生み出した。
ローライダーSTはまさにその流れを汲んでいるのだ。
