トヨタ・スプリンター・トレノ
歴代の“86”をイッキ乗りするイベント「86 WINTER FESTIVAL」が、富士スピードウェイを舞台に開催された！ 参加したサトータケシがリポートする。今なお根強い人気を誇るトヨタ「スプリンター・トレノ（AE86）」を試乗。あの時代の名車を今、あらためて乗って気づくこととは。

富士スピードウェイホテル、TOYOTA GAZOO Racing、そしてVintage Club by KINTOの3社によるコレボレーション企画「86 WINTER FESTIVAL」の取材で、3代目のトヨタ・スプリンター・トレノ（AE86型）に試乗した。
1983年に登場したAE86は、ベースとなるカローラ／スプリンターが前輪駆動に移行するなか、後輪駆動を維持したスポーツモデル。漫画『頭文字D』の影響もあって、“ハチロク”は特別なブランドとなり、そのストーリーは現在のトヨタ86に引き継がれている。
乗り込んでドライバーズシートに腰を下ろした瞬間、眼前には懐かしい風景が広がった。というのも、私事だが、40年ほど前にAE86型「カローラ・レビン」に乗っていたからだ。“思い出補正”がかかっているせいで、記憶の中の“ハチロク”は美化されているけれど、はたしていま乗るとどうなのか？
興味津々で、「4A-G」という型式で呼ばれる1.6リッター直列4気筒16バルブユニットを始動する。
キャブレターだったTE27レビンの「2T-G」ユニットと異なり、こちらは電子制御式燃料噴射なので、シュンと目覚め、アイドリングもすぐに安定する。シフトストロークが短いことも27レビンとの違いで、小さなアクションでカチッとシフトが入る。
走り出してびっくりしたのは、ハンドルが軽いことだった。筆者の愛車はスパルタンな仕様の「GTV」だったのでノンパワーのステアリングだったけれど、試乗車は「GT-APEX」という豪華仕様でパワーステアリングなのだ。
で、数十m走っただけだけれど、「こりゃいまのクルマと変わらない」と、感じた。4A-Gは低回転域から気難しい素振りを見せないし、ハンドルは軽いだけでなく、この世代からステアリングギアボックスがラック＆ピニオンに切り替わっているので、操舵フィールも爽やかだ。
