クルマからリアウィンドウが消えた！ ボルボの高級ブランド「ポールスター」が新モデルで挑戦したこと
ボルボの高級ブランド「ポールスター」は、デザインを重視した電気自動車（EV）専用のブランドである。したがって、「ポールスター4」の登場に驚きはなかった（これまで「ポールスター1」「ポールスター2」「ポールスター3」と順番通りに発売されている）。

ところが示唆に富んでいることに、このラテラルシンキング（水平思考）と独特のスタイルを特徴とする先進的なブランドは、あまり成功していないニッチな市場を救おうとしているようだ。その市場とは「SUVクーペ」である。
ボルボのポールスター部門の最高経営責任者（CEO）であるトーマス・インゲンラートが、元デザイナーであることも影響しているだろう。「既存のSUVを単に高速走行に適したルーフに変更したことで、後部座席の空間や快適性などで妥協を強いられるようなことはありませんでした。ポールスター4は新たなタイプのSUVクーペとしてゼロから設計し、後部座席の快適性を向上しています」と、インゲンラートは語る。
最も強力なデュアルモーターのポールスター4は容量が102kWhのバッテリーを搭載し、WLTPモードでの走行可能距離は350マイル（約563km）で、ポールスターとして最高性能を誇る。一方で人々の目は車体のデザイン、特にリアのデザインに引きつけられることになるだろう。というのも、クルマに当然あるべきリアウィンドウがないのだ。
リアウィンドウをなくすというアイデアは、ポールスターが2020年に発表した華やかなコンセプトカー「Precept」でも試されていた。それが今回、ついに実現したというわけだ。デザイナーが「ガラスの家」と形容する今回のデザインがクルマが示す“意図”の中核になることを考えると、その主要な要素をなくしたことは強烈なメッセージと言えるだろう。
それをポールスターは、過去の遺物と言えるバックミラーを高解像度のディスプレイに置き換えたことで実現した。画面には屋根に配置されたカメラからのリアルタイム映像が表示され、かなり広い視野を確認できる。
こうしたテクノロジーは新しいものではない。例えばレンジローバーは、以前から「ClearSightインテリア・リアビューミラー」という同じようなシステムを導入している。ところがポールスターは、こうしたシステムの可能性を初めて最大限に引き出したのだ。
その理由を説明しよう。まず、車体を引き伸ばしたようなシルエットにすることで、空気力学性能も最適化されている。空力性能はEVの走行距離を伸ばすための重要な要素だ。ポールスター4の空気抵抗係数（Cd値）は0.26と非常に優れている。そしてリアウィンドウをなくすことで、車体後部の構造を再考することも可能になった。
「これまでは物理的なミラーのせいで、後ろに開口部を設けなくてはなりませんでした」と、ポールスターのデザイン部門を率いるマクシミリアン・ミッソーニは説明する。「いまではカメラの解像度が相当に高く、夜間でもうまく機能します。それにソフトウェアも常に改善されているので、システムに徐々に価値を付け加えることができます。リアウィンドウを取り除いたことで全体的に後ろ寄りのシルエットになり、結果として“繭（コクーン）”のようなデザインが生まれたのです」
インゲンラートとミッソーニのふたりは自動車業界でも指折りのデザインチームであり、その実績はフォルクスワーゲンやボルボでも証明済みだ。カーブランドのトップのなかには“デザイン音痴”もいるが、ミッソーニはインゲンラートがもつ深いデザインの知識が助けになっていることを認めている。それでもポールスター4は、コンセプトデザインの理論化と同じくらい実用的な思考の産物であるという。
「自動車の開発は、その時代に利用できるテクノロジーによって推進されてきました。一方で、テクノロジーによって空気力学の点からも性能が向上し、明るくゆったりとした室内空間も実現しました」と、ミッソーニは言う。「そうした要素はSUVクーペにおいて、しばしば相容れないものです。流れるようなシルエットは目指して当然であり、そうでなければやる意味はありません。しかし、そうすると車内空間については妥協せざるをえません。テクノロジーを駆使したことでポールスター4の形状では、すべての要素が自由になりました」
「古い手法を取り入れることも学びました。しかし、デザイナー兼エンジニアとしては、『これと競合するテクノロジーはあるのか？』と問いかけるのは明らかにいいことなのです。その答えは通常なら、『ある。でもそれほど優れたテクノロジーではないから気にしなくていい』となります。しかし、カメラやそれに関連するソフトウェアなどのデジタル技術の場合は、追加できる機能がたくさんあります。それらの既知のことからいろいろ思い描くと、大きな可能性が生まれるのです」
