新型宇宙服用次世代バイザー 50年振りの月面探査に向け
オークリーとアクシオム・スペースは、次世代宇宙服となるアクシオム船外活動ユニット「AxEMU(Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit)」のバイザーシステムに関するパートナーシップを正式に発表した。この宇宙服はNASAのアルテミスIIIミッションの一環として50年以上ぶりに月面へと向かう宇宙飛行士が着用するもの。

バイザーシステムは、光の屈折が地球上とは異なり、影がより深くなるという視覚的に過酷な宇宙環境に対応するために設計。星明かりから直射日光まで、有害な放射線から目を保護し、宇宙飛行士が必要とするクリアな視界と防御を提供する。
アルテミスIIIミッションで月面に降り立つ宇宙飛行士には、クリアな視界と、赤外線、極端な温度、微小隕石から目を保護する、宇宙服専用の視覚システムが必要とされる。開発される「AxEMUバイザーシステム」の主な特徴は以下の通り。
・シームレスにスライド・2層構造のスライド収納式バイザーで、調整可能な保護を実現
・過酷な光環境に対応する反射性のゴールドコーティング
・強い日差し下でも視認性を高める可視光透過率の調整
・クリアな視界を最適化するためのヘイズ(かすみ)低減
・バイザー内面およびセカンダリーヘルメットバブルに施された多層コーティング
・月面の塵(レゴリス)から保護する耐傷コーティング
・紫外線および月面の塵から宇宙飛行士を守るセカンダリーヘルメットバブル
元JAXAの宇宙飛行士で、現在はアクシオム・スペースの宇宙飛行士兼最高技術責任者(CTO)を務める若田光一氏は、「宇宙では太陽の光が非常に強烈で、まるで目を突き刺すように感じる」としており、過酷な環境から宇宙飛行士を守るシステムが必要であると語っている。
