新型ホンダN-VANは、徹底的に遊べる“軽”だった！ 改良モデルの走りと使い勝手に迫る
一部改良を受けたホンダの商用バン「N-VAN」に今尾直樹が試乗した！

一見、なんでもないN-VANのようだけれど、ドアを開けるとビックリ！ インテリアはカーキ色で、いかにもギヤ、アウトドアの道具っぽい。このカーキ色のインテリアがこの春、正確には4月19日、ホンダの軽商用バンのN-VANにくわわった特別仕様車 「STYLE＋NATURE（スタイルプラス ネイチャー）」の見どころだ。ベースは丸型ヘッドライトのFUNという、ビジネスというよりはホビー向けを意識したグレードである。
試乗の印象は、正直、あまりピンと来なかった。動力性能は軽660ccの自然吸気（NA）エンジンで、980kgという1t近い車重のことを考えると不満はない。むしろ、ウチの「N-ONE」よりよいようにも思う。というのも、わが家のN-ONEは2012年発売の初代で、初代は初代N-BOXベースなのである。対して2018年に登場したN-VANは、同じN-BOXベースでも2代目のプラットフォームを流用している。1世代違うのだ。
エンジンは、658cc直列3気筒横置きDOHCのS07Bで、最高出力53ps/6800rpmと 最大トルク64Nm/4800rpmを軽やかに生み出す。ウチの初代N-ONEより静かで、中低速トルクがある。まわすと、さすがにうるさいけれど、まわさなくても十分走る。
だけど、乗り心地はフラット感にイマイチ欠けるし、アクセルのオン／オフ時のピッチング方向の姿勢変化が大きい。ついウチのN-ONEと比べてしまうから、なおさらそう感じるのかもしれない。なんせN-VANは全高が1945mmもある。N-ONEよりどうしたって重心が高い。コーナーというほどのコーナーは今回都内をチョロっと走っただけだから走っていないけれど、首都高速2号線のカーブでは妙に安定している。ハンドリングは“ド”がつくアンダーステアであることを頭に入れておけば、無問題である。
ドライブしながら、筆者もハタと気づいた。N-VANというのは商用バンであることに。FFの最大積載量は2名乗車時で350kg、4名乗車時は200kgとカタログにある。荷室に350kg積んでも耐えられるような脚に仕立てられている。働くクルマに空荷で乗って、乗り心地がイマイチだなんて、どの口がいうか、という話である。あかん。これはいかにも不当だ。自分で書いていて、そう思う。空荷なのにポンポン、リヤが跳ねない。むしろ、そのことに感心すべきではないか。
しかして、今回の試乗では実証できていないこともまた確かである。運ぶ荷物もなかった。宅配便のバイトを突然始めるわけにもいかない。時間があれば別であるにしても、テストのためとはいえ広報車で宅配便のバイトをやっていた。という噂になるのも切ない。
