初代「iMac」発売から25年、その革新的なデザインの歴史を振り返る
アップルが初代「iMac」を米国で1998年に発売してから、2023年8月15日で25周年を迎えた。革新的なデザインのディスプレイ一体型PCとして一世を風靡したiMacは、現在は薄型化してアップル独自プロセッサーを搭載するなど進化を続けている。その歴史を写真で振り返ろう。

世界的な衝撃をもたらしたプロダクトデザインの事例をコンピューター分野で挙げるとすると、その筆頭格が1998年に発売されたアップルの初代「iMac」だろう。いまでは液晶ディスプレイそのものにも見える薄型のアルミニウム製ボディが印象的なiMacだが、初代モデルはポリカーボネート製の半透明ボディからブラウン管を見せる斬新なデザインが特徴で、アップル復活の立役者となった製品だ。
「hello (again)」のキャッチコピーと共に発表された初代iMacは、一度はアップルから追放されていたスティーブ・ジョブズが暫定CEO（最高経営責任者）として復帰してから最初の製品でもある。ジョブズは1984年に初代Macを「hello」のキャッチコピーで発表しており、それを踏まえたPCの“再発明”という位置づけでもあった。
当時のPCといえばグレーなどの“地味”な色が中心だった時代に、色鮮やかなiMacは爆発的なヒットとなった。これにより経営難に陥っていたアップルの業績は、一気に回復へと向かうことになる。
のちにiMacはキャンディを思わせる5色展開によって再びヒットし、これを契機に以後のアップル製品はカラーバリエーションを重視していく。このように初代iMacは、さまざまな意味でエポックメイキングな製品だったのだ。
