新型BMW X7 M60i xDriveが、内燃機関のスポーティ＆ラグジュアリーな大型車を望む人に最適な理由とは？
BMWの新型「X7」の高性能バージョン「M60i xDrive」に、今尾直樹が試乗した。大型SUVとは思えぬ走りに迫る。

これほど大きなクルマがこれほど敏捷に動くとは!? もうびっくりである。
2022年のマイナーチェンジでマイルド・ハイブリッドの洗礼を受け、以前のBMW X7 M50i xDriveから新たにM60i xDrive へと進化したこのSUV、BMWいうところのSAV(スポーツ・アクティヴィティ・ヴィークル)の大型車は異次元のアジリティを獲得していた。
いやはや、すごい！ 昨年、X7のディーゼルに試乗したときも驚いたけれど、今度はもっと驚いた。X7の高性能版、BMW M社が手がけた4.4リッターV8ツインターボを搭載するM60iは、スーパーヘビー級なのにバンタム級みたいに動けるのだ。
「フローズン・ブラック・メタリック」というスペシャルカラーをまとった広報車は、光を吸収するブラックの効果で小さく見える。じつはボディサイズは全長×全幅×全高＝5170×2000×1835mm、ホイールベースは3105mmもある。一般に、全長5m、ホイールベース3mを超えると、でっかいクルマ、ということになるけれど、X7はその目安を軽々と超えている。車重は2610kgと、BEV（バッテリー式電気自動車）並みに重い。
こんなに大きくて重いのに、アクセルペダルを軽く踏むだけで、スイと前に出るのは、冒頭に記したごとく、マイルド・ハイブリッド・システムを装備しているからだ。
発進・加速時に、8速オートマチックと統合されたモーターが、最高出力こそ12psと控えめながら、200Nmの最大トルクでもって内燃機関ではできない1800rpm以下の低回転域を補い、アシスト役をつとめている。
都内での試乗では実力の4分の1ぐらいしか確かめられなかったけれど、4.4L V8ツインターボの最高出力530ps、最大トルク750Nmという途方もないパワー＆トルクの片鱗をうかがうことはできた。全開は無理。首都高の制限速度だと、エンジンの回転計は1200〜1300rpmあたりでゆるゆる回っているだけ。踏めば即座に加速するのは、ここでもモーターの加勢があるからだ。
象みたいな巨体なのに俊敏に反応し、V8が3000rpmを超えるとスポーティなサウンドが控えめに轟く。もちろん、いわゆるドライブモードをスポーツ、さらにスポーツ＋に切り替えれば、乗り心地は引き締まり、エンジン回転が上がってサウンドの凄みは増す。交通量の多い都会ではほんの一瞬しか味わえない悦楽。黙って静粛性を楽しむべし。
