日本初の金星探査機「あかつき」、15年にわたる運用を終了
JAXAは、金星探査機「あかつき」(PLANET-C)について、2025年9月18日午前9時に停波作業を実施し、同探査機の15年に渡る運用を終了した。

「あかつき」は、2010年5月21日に種子島宇宙センターからH-IIAロケット17号機で打ち上げられた日本初の金星探査機で、2015年12月に金星周回軌道投入に成功。日本の探査機として初めて地球以外の惑星を回る軌道に投入された。
8年間以上にわたり金星大気の観測を継続し、これまで太陽系最大の山岳波の発見や金星に吹き荒れる暴風「高速大気回転(スーパーローテーション)」維持メカニズムの解明、地球の気象学研究で用いられるデータ同化手法の導入など惑星気象学にも関わる科学成果を創出してきた。
しかし、2024年4月末に、姿勢維持の精度が高くない制御モードが長く続いたことを発端として通信が途絶。通信の回復に向けて復旧運用を続けてきたが、回復は見込めない状況となった。また、元々大幅に設計寿命を超えて後期運用の段階に入っていたこともあり、運用を終了することが決定された。
