沖縄駐留 米海兵隊参謀長 隊員性的暴行事件判決受け 県に陳謝
沖縄に駐留するアメリカ海兵隊の参謀長が3日、沖縄県庁を訪れ、隊員が女性に性的暴行しようとしてけがをさせたとして、先月、有罪判決を受けたことを陳謝しました。
去年5月、沖縄本島で面識のない成人女性に性的暴行をしようとして首を絞めるなどの暴行を加え、けがをさせた罪に問われたアメリカ海兵隊の22歳の上等兵に対し、那覇地方裁判所は先月24日、懲役7年の判決を言い渡しました。
この判決を受けて、3日、沖縄に駐留する第3海兵師団の参謀長ニール・オーウェンズ大佐が沖縄県庁を訪れて溜政仁知事公室長らと面会し、「海兵隊員があのような判決を受けたことに関して被害者と不安を与えた県民におわびを申し上げる」と陳謝しました。
溜公室長は、県内ではおととし12月以降、アメリカ軍兵士による性的暴行事件などが8件発生しているとしたうえで、「米軍は一部の隊員が事件を起こしているという趣旨の発言をしているが、米軍人による性的暴行事件は後を絶たず、内部統制に疑念を持たざるをえない」と指摘しました。
これに対し、オーウェンズ大佐は「私たちは海兵隊員が起こすすべての事件・事故について真摯に受け止めており、隊員に対しては高い基準を設けている。多くの隊員は基地の外で基準を順守し適切に行動しているが、守らなかった隊員には責任をとらせている」と述べ、効果的な再発防止策に向けて関係機関と連携していく考えを示しました。
