北海道 士別 羊の毛を刈る作業が最盛期
北海道有数の羊の産地、士別市では、夏に向けて気温が上がるのを前に、羊の毛を刈る作業が最盛期を迎えています。
北海道士別市はおよそ1450頭の羊を飼育する北海道内有数の産地で、このうち「かわにしの丘しずお農場」では4月中旬から羊の毛を刈る作業が始まっています。
7日は市の地域おこし協力隊員などの講習も兼ねて行われ、ニュージーランドで羊の毛刈り職人として働いている大石隼さん（45）が講師を務めました。
大石さんは、羊が暴れないように手足を使って羊を固定することが重要だと説明したうえで、専用のバリカンを使って体全体を覆う毛を素早く刈る方法を実演しました。
このあと講習の参加者は慣れない手つきで汗を流しながら1頭1頭の毛を丁寧に刈り込んでいました。
4月から地域おこし協力隊として士別市で働いている桐生真太郎さん（39）は「今後の独立を目指しているので、1人で何頭もこなしていけるように技術を磨いていきたい」と話していました。
講師の大石さんは「毛は伸びすぎるとかゆみやダニの付着にもつながるので、毛刈りは重要な作業です。受講生がだんだん上手になっていく様子は見ていてもうれしいです」と話していました。
この農場では5月下旬までに羊の毛刈りを終える予定だということです。
