9月19日、メルセデス・ベンツ日本は、メルセデス・マイバッハSクラスの特別仕様車「S 680 Edition Northern Lights」を発表した。
メルセデス・マイバッハS 680 Edition Northern Lightsのボディカラーは、北極圏の白銀の大地を照らす幻想的な紫のオーロラの輝きからインスピレーションを得た特別なツートーン「MANUFAKTURオパリスホワイト（メタリック）/MANUFAKTURノーザンライツバイオレット（メタリック）」を採用した。
各所にはダークシャドウグロスパーツやブラックパーツを装備。足まわりには、21インチマイバッハアルミホイール（鍛造）を履く。
インテリアのうち、シートは通常モデルでは有償オプションの「MANUFAKTURローズグレー／ブラック（ナッパレザー）」を採用。ヘッドレストにはマイバッハロゴの刺繍が施され、リヤにはシート同色のレザーを使用したクッションも備わる。後席が左右独立シートとなるファーストクラスパッケージも採用し、クーリングボックスやシャンパーニュグラスも備わる。
インテリアトリムには、通常モデルでは有償オプションの「MANUFAKTURダークブラウンオープンポアウォールナットウッドインテリアトリム」を装備。リヤの左右独立シートの中央には「ダークシャドウグロスパーツ」が装着され、マイバッハブランドの特別感を際立たせる。その他にも「マイバッハパターン入りセンタートリム」や「MANUFAKTURナッパレザールーフライナー」、「格納式テーブル（後席）」などを装備し差別化を図る。
オーディオシステムも、通常は有償オプションの「Brumester®ハイエンド4Dサラウンドサウンドシステム」を装備。前後シートに内蔵された合計8つのエキサイターによって身体に直接振動を感じさせることで4Dサウンドを楽しめる。運転席ヘッドレストにふたつ内蔵されたスピーカーは、サウンド効果を高めるばかりではなく、通話や案内の音声が聞き取りやすくなる。さらに、前後の席でサウンドシステムを通した会話が可能となり、走行中の車内コミュニケーションをサポートする。加えてアクティブロードノイズキャンセル機能も搭載。逆位相の音でノイズを打ち消すアクティブノイズキャンセリングによって不快な低周波のロードノイズを効果的に低減する。
パワートレインは、5,980ccのV型12気筒ツインターボエンジン「M279」を搭載。最高出力612ps（450kW）、最大トルク900Nmを発揮し、9G-TRONICのトランスミッションと4輪駆動システム「4MATIC」と組み合わせれる。
