人気コミック「シティーハンター」を実写化し、鈴木亮平が主人公・冴羽獠をユーモアたっぷりに演じた。

主人公である冴羽獠は、相棒の槇村とともに歌舞伎町を拠点に、裏社会での様々なトラブル処理を請け負う超一流のスイーパー（＝始末屋）として活躍していた。無類の美女好きで、美女に出会うとタガが外れてしまうが、いざ依頼を受ければ、並み外れた銃の腕と身体能力、そして冷静沈着な頭脳で、仕事を遂行する。
獠は、捜索依頼を受けた有名コスプレイヤーくるみの捜査中、相棒・槇村を亡くしてしまう。槇村の妹・香は、兄の死の真相を探ろうと一人歌舞伎町の裏社会に乗り込む。一方、同時期に新宿で勃発していた失踪事件に、謎の薬が関わっていること、くるみがその薬の重要な鍵を握ることが判明。香を危険な事件に巻き込みたくない獠は香を避け続けるが、槇村の死の真相を明らかにするため、香とともに、事件解決へ向けて動き出すのだが……。
■伝説のコミック「シティーハンター」を実写化！
北条司による大人気アニメ作品「シティーハンター」を元に、舞台を令和の新宿に移して実写化。オリジナルは1985年から1991年に「週刊少年ジャンプ」（集英社刊）で連載し、現在までに単行本の累計発行部数が5000万部を突破している大人気作品だ。
『シティーハンター』実写化が発表され、冴羽獠役が鈴木亮平と聞いた時、意外なキャスティングだと感じた。なぜなら原作の冴羽獠は、細身の体躯で、クールでありながら三枚目という印象があるが、鈴木亮平は鍛え上げられがっちりとした体格で、三枚目のおちゃらけたキャラという印象は薄く、原作とは正反対のイメージだったからだ。しかし鑑賞数分後には、筆者がもっていたその印象は、鈴木の一面しか捉えられていなかったと気づく。
本作で鈴木は、役になりきるべく細身ながら美しく鍛え上げられた体型を作りあげ、細身のスラックスにタートルネック、オーバーサイズのトレンチコートを着こなす皆がよく知るあの”冴羽獠”へと見事に変身した。その変貌っぷりも白眉だが、見どころはその演技力だ。クールで近づきがたい冴羽獠、コミカルでお茶目な獠ちゃん、アクションや華麗な銃さばきをみせる冴羽といったように、まさに七変化とはこのこと。アニメやコミックでは、シーンに合わせてキャラクターの顔が大きくなったり、背が小さくなったりと、キャラをデフォルメして感情を表現するが、本作の鈴木亮平は、まるでアニメ版「シティーハンター」のように、振り向くたびに、表情や声色をガラッと変化させる。さらに、物語中盤に見せる鈴木の一糸まとわぬ姿は本作の見せ場のひとつだ。こんなコミカルな演技もできるのかと感心してしまう。しかも、「シティーハンター」といえば、少々下品な下ネタもその特徴だが、鈴木亮平の演技からは下品さは全く感じられないのだ。
■ハードボイルドコメディながらバディものでもある
本作は社会の裏にはびこる闇組織との闘争をおもしろおかしく描いたコメディ作品だが、獠と香が唯一無二の相棒となっていくきっかけを描いたバディものでもある。バディものというと近年では女性たちの連帯を描いたシスターフッド作品や、男性同士の絆を描いたブロマンスなどが主流だったが、年齢も性別も違うふたりが、嫌味を言い合いながら協力していく姿は新鮮だ。オリジナルは昭和に作られたアニメ作品ゆえ、当時はさらに斬新な設定だったのだろう。
現代の新宿や歌舞伎町の街を使ったダイナミックでエネルギー溢れるシーンの数々も原作にはない見どころのひとつ。トーヨコに集まる若者のファッションやコスプレーヤー、ドラァグクイーンが踊るクラブなど東京らしい風景もふんだんに取り入れているので海外からの反応も楽しみだ。実写版『シティーハンター』は昭和っぽさがところどころ香るコミカルな演技と令和の東京、そこにスタイリッシュなVFXを取り入れた新感覚のハードボイルドコメディ。ぜひ鈴木亮平による体当たりの演技をいち早く目に焼き付けて欲しい。
