ハリー杉山が質問! ポール・スミスのジェントルマン哲学
2020年にブランド設立50周年を迎え、今もなお進化を続けるポール・スミス。紳士の国、英国を代表するデザイナーのサー・ポール・スミスに、ハリー杉山がジェントルマンについて訊いた。

ハリー杉山（以下、ハリー） ジェントルマンとはどのようなもので、どのように生まれたと思いますか?
ポール・スミス（以下、ポール） 英国のジェントルマンというのは、外見的な装いだけではなく、態度や所作に現れるものです。ジェントルマンの装いについては昔の階級制度も関係していて、田舎と都会で着ている服は違っていましたが、現在はその土地の服装だけでなく何もかもが変わっています。コミュニケーションが昔より直接的になった影響も大きいかもしれないですね。ジェントルマンと思える人は昔に比べて少なくなってしまったと感じます。
ハリー 日本では、ジェントルマンといえば「いい服を着ている人」と思われることが多いですが、ジェントルマンが現代の装いにどのような影響を及ぼしているのでしょうか?
ポール ジェントルマンの重要な資質のひとつがアイテム選びです。例えば、ジェントルマンのひとり、エドモンド・ヒラリー卿はエベレストの登頂に成功したとき、古き良き英国のツイードを着ていました。彼は機能性を考えて18オンスのイングランド北部のウールが山登りには必要だと考えたんです。朝の着替えに2時間かけて丁寧にアイテムを選んだジェントルマンたちがたくさんいましたが、現在では4分で着替えを済ませている人が多いですよね。ひとつひとつアイテムをじっくり選び、現代と伝統の間でバランスの取れた生活をいかに送るかがジェントルマンにとって重要だと思います。
ハリー ポールは幼い頃からスーツを着ていたそうですが、僕がイギリスの学校に通っていた頃は、ポール・スミスのスーツを買うことは金銭的に難しかったので、個性的なヴィンテージを着てファッションを楽しんでいました。
ポール 個性は私のモットーです。現代社会はとても画一的で、誰もが同じトレンドを追いかけています。私が駆け出しの頃は、誰とも被らないことが重要でした。個性的な格好をしているのにマナーが良く礼儀正しい人はギャップがあって面白く、素敵なジェントルマンだと思いませんか?
ハリー スーツを着ることで、私たちは人生を快適に過ごし、自分自身に自信を持てるようになるのでしょうか?
ポール 私にとってスーツはペンやノートのような実用的なもの。だから、スーツを着ていても、ボンバージャケットを着ていても自分にとっては同じ。私が取り組んでいる「モダン・ワーキング・ワードローブ」は、新しい暮らし方や仕事のスタイルに寄り添った汎用性の高いテーラードのスタイルを提案しています。私がスーツを着始めた頃は、スーツといえば面接か葬儀か結婚式くらいでした。今のスーツはとてもソフトで着心地が良く、デニムのシャツと合わせてもいいし、白いTシャツと合わせてもいい。スーツはもっと自由であるべきです。
ハリー テーラリングのトレンドは今後どうなっていくと思いますか?
ポール フォーマルな服を着る必要がなくなった現代社会ですが、またみんなスーツを着たくなると思います。テーラリングはシリアスなものだと思われがちですが、私はいつもそれがいかに楽しいものであるかを伝えたいと考えてきました。クールなスーツをバシッと着た佇まいより素敵に見えるものはないですから。
ハリー デヴィッド・ボウイ、レッド・ツェッペリンのジミー・ペイジ、そしてポール・マッカートニーなど、ジェントルマンの代表とも言えるアーティストたちもあなたのスーツを好んで着ていましたね。
ポール 彼らの多くは、ポール・スミスがインディペンデントな個性を持っていて、顔の見えない大きなグループには属していないという個性に共鳴してくれたんだと思います。
ハリー 私がポール・スミスを知るきっかけは、数年前に亡くなった父でした。ジャーナリストだった父は、晩年の病院内でもツイードのジャケットを着てお洒落をして、華やかさがあり、センスとユーモアも兼ね備えた真のジェントルマンで、父の姿をみて、私もそんなふうになりたいと強く思いました。最後に、ジェントルマンになるためのアドバイスはありますか?
ポール ジェントルマンとは人に興味を持ち、自分に興味を持ってもらえるように個性を発揮できる大人で、装いはその一部です。将来、希望の仕事に就きたいとか、素敵なライフスタイルを送りたいなどの願望は、きっと、自分らしく生きていけば実現するでしょう。
