ソフトバンク、次世代セルラーIoT「5G RedCap」開始 新Apple Watch対応
ソフトバンクは、スタンドアローン方式の5G通信ネットワーク(5G SA)で動作する、次世代のIoT向け通信規格「5G RedCap」のネットワークについて、9月中旬以降に商用サービスを開始する。9月19日発売で5G対応の新しいApple Watchでも利用できる。
「5G RedCap」(レッドキャップ、Reduced Capability)は、5G時代の新たなセルラーIoTの規格で、3GPP Release17で仕様が策定された。5Gの通信性能や機能をIoT向けに最適化するもので、スマートウォッチやウェアラブル端末、将来的には監視カメラなどでの活用が期待されている。今後、Cat.4などの4G LTEベースのIoT向け通信規格からの移行や、IoT機器の普及に伴う利用拡大が見込まれている。
ソフトバンクの5G RedCapは、5G SAエリアの一部で提供を開始し、順次拡大する。通信速度はソフトバンクの4G LTEと同等。5G RedCapの利用には対応機種が必要。利用の申し込みは不要。料金は、対応機種の料金プランに準ずる。
