JR東、ワンマン運転を京浜東北線・総武線で開始 27年春
JR東日本は2027年春から、京浜東北・根岸線の大宮駅～南浦和駅間、蒲田駅～大船駅間(10両編成)、中央・総武線(各駅停車)の三鷹駅～千葉駅間(10両編成)でワンマン運転を開始する。

JR東日本では、2030年頃までに首都圏主要線区をワンマン運転とする計画を24年11月に発表しており、25年3月に常磐線(各駅停車)、南武線でワンマン運転を開始したほか、26年春に横浜・根岸線 八王子駅～大船駅間(8両編成)で開始することも公表している。ワンマン運転の拡大を進めることで、生産年齢人口減少による労働力不足の恒久化といった社会環境の変化への対応を図る。
ワンマン運転実施に伴う安全性・輸送安定性への取り組みも進めており、運転席への乗降確認モニタの設置、異常時等で乗客と輸送指令室との通話や輸送指令室から直接車内放送を行なう機能の導入を進めている。
乗降確認モニタでは、運転士が運転席に設置した乗降確認モニタで、全てのドアの乗り降りの状況を一目で確認できる。
乗客と輸送指令室との通話は、乗客がSOSボタンを押した後、運転士が応答できない場合に輸送指令室に直接つながり、乗客と輸送指令員が会話できる。輸送指令室からの車内放送は、運転士が車内放送できない状況にある時などに実施する。
また、輸送安定性の向上および運転士の負担軽減に向け、TASC(定位置停止装置)を整備している。京浜東北・根岸線の大宮駅～大船駅間を走行するE233系 10両編成には、ATO(自動列車運転装置)を導入し、さらなる輸送安定性向上を図っている。ATOとは、運転士による運転台の出発ボタン操作により、列車衝突防止のための自動列車制御装置(ATC)の信号の制限速度範囲内で、駅間の速度を自動制御するシステム。
そのほか、列車の外への避難が必要になった際に使用する避難はしごを、列車の最前部と最後部に整備する。必要に応じて乗客自身で使用できるように設置するが、避難の際は、近隣の駅などから係員を派遣するなど安全に配慮した手配を行なう。
