2024年、レクサスのグローバル販売台数は85万1214台に達し、過去最高を記録したという。2021年には76万12台だったので、わずか3年で9万台以上も伸ばしたことになる。先行するヨーロッパのプレミアムブランドに、数の面でも追いつきつつあるといっていいだろう。
そんなレクサスの人気の秘密を、先ごろ一部改良モデルがリリースされたクロスオーバーSUVのRXに試乗しながら考えてみた。
試乗車はハイブリッドを持たない2.4リッター・ターボエンジンを搭載したRX350の“F SPORT”というグレード。パワートレインとしてはエントリークラスだが、“F SPORT”という名称からもわかるとおりスポーティモデルという位置づけ。後述する理由により、これがなかなかの人気だという。
もっとも、一般的なスポーティモデルと違って、“F SPORT”といえども乗り心地がゴツゴツしていないのはレクサスらしいというべきか。
ただし、ロールやピッチといったボディーの動きはよく抑えられていて、軽いコーナリングを試してもフラットな姿勢を崩さない。この辺が“F SPORT”を名乗るゆえんだろう。
ハンドリングも過敏なところは一切ないけれど、ステアリングを切れば切った分だけ素直に曲がってくれるし、その際のレスポンスも悪くない。この辺のマイルドさとほどよいスポーティさのバランスが、“F SPORT”の真骨頂といってよさそうだ。
2.4リッター・ターボエンジンは最高出力279ps、最大トルク430Nmの高性能を誇るが、ハイブリッド車やEVの電気モーターが発進時に生み出す大トルクに慣れてしまった身には、極低速域のトルク感がやや物足りなく感じられないこともない。
だからといって街中の走りで不自由することはもちろんないのだけれど、この、ほんの少しだけ“物足りない部分”がある分、そこから先の伸び感がより強調されて、スポーティモデルに相応しいドラマティックな加速感が味わえる。
それも、いわゆる“ドッカンターボ”のように手に負えなくなるほど急速に加速感が立ち上がるわけではなく、それとなくわかる程度の、おだやかな感じで力強さが増していくところがレクサスらしいともいえる。
つまり、全体的にはよく洗練されているし安心感も強いのだけれど、その先に、ほんの少しだけスポーティな味わいも見せてくれるあたりがRX350“F SPORT”の真髄なのである。
