アマゾンジャパン25周年 顧客ニーズにあわせた日本の物流進化
アマゾンジャパンは、アジア初開催となる、最新の物流・配送技術などを発表するグローバルイベント「Delivering the Future APAC」を、東京の神田明神文化会館で開催した。

冒頭ではアマゾンジャパン社長 ジャスパー・チャン氏が登壇。同氏は、「アマゾンジャパンは日本に進出して25周年となる。2000年11月に1つの物流センターから事業を開始し、その後は商品カテゴリを拡大しながらサービスを展開。ワンクリック注文やAmazonプライム、AmazonフレッシュなどのサービスやKindleなどのデバイス展開だけでなく、衛星通信サービスも開始しようとしている」など、これまでのサービス展開について語ったほか、「物流センターも26箇所に増え、47都道府県で翌日配送サービスも展開し、置き配やAmazonロッカーなども展開してきた」と、顧客ニーズに合わせた取り組みによって物流・配送技術を進化させてきたことにも触れた。
特に、フルフィルメントセンターで導入されている袋詰めの自動梱包機は、日本で開発された技術。商品のサイズに合わせて自動的に梱包されるため、梱包材の使用量を減らし、労働者の負担も軽減している。現在、オーストラリアとイタリアでも導入されている。
続いて、Amazon Robotics部門でチーフテクノロジストを務めるタイ・ブレディ氏が登壇。ブレディ氏は「Amazonはこれまで、顧客ニーズから逆算してサービスを考案してきた」とし、その問題解決の過程で、ロボット導入による物流の革新は必要不可欠であったという。
同氏は10年前に初めてAmazonがロボットを導入した時から事業を担当しているが、「10年前にロボットを導入するという決断は、大胆な決断だった。しかし正しい選択だった」と当時を振り返った。実際に、1,250ポンド(約570kg)もの商品を運ぶロボットや、床に貼ったQRコードで誘導するシステムなどをシアトル近郊の拠点に導入したことで、「従業員が1日何マイルも歩いて商品を取りに行く必要がなくなった」とし、作業効率を大きく向上させることに成功した。
同社では現在、ロボットを統合・最適化するAIモデル「Deep Fleet」を導入しており、これによりロボットの移動効率が10%向上。AIが大量の在庫データを解析し、商品をより効率良く配置できるため、配送のさらなる迅速化も可能になった。
なお、Amazonでは、グローバルにおいて現在300以上の施設で100万台のロボットを導入しているが、その100万台目のロボットは、「Amazon千葉みなとフルフィルメントセンター」に導入されたという。
同イベントでは、Amazonと三菱地所が、愛知県名古屋市にAmazonの物流拠点(フルフィルメントセンター:FC)を今夏新設することも発表された。
会場となった神田明神文化会館においては、7月2日からアマゾンジャパン25年の歩みをたどる記念展示を一般公開する。
