アルピナの未来はいかに？ 最後の“純アルピナ車”D3 Sツーリングに乗って考える

ボーフェンジーペン家が手掛ける最後のアルピナに2025年8月試乗した。
遡ること3年前、衝撃的なプレスリリースが配信された。タイトルは「ALPINAブランドがBMWグループの一員に」。
リリースでは以下の通り記されている。
「ボーフェンジーペン家が、57年間にわたり結んできたBMWとの長年のパートナーシップは、新たな局面を迎えることとなりました。『ALPINA』はBMWグループのブランドとなります。BMWは、ALPINAが長年築いてきたラグジュアリーイメージを引継ぎ、2026年以降、ALPINAを高級車ラインアップの一員として加えます」
アルピナは、ブルカルト・ボーフェンジーペンによって1965年に創業。BMW 1500用ウェーバー・デュアルキャブレター・システムの開発・販売からスタートし、1978年には3つの完全な自社開発モデルを発表した。BMW 3シリーズに200psの2.8リッター直列6気筒エンジンを搭載したBMW ALPINA B6 2.8、BMW 5シリーズをベースとし、当時世界最速のセダンとなったBMW ALPINA B7 Turbo、そして300psを発揮する世界でもっともパワフルなスポーツクーペの一員となったBMW ALPINA B7 Turbo Coupéだ。
以降、BMWの市販車をベースとしたアルピナ独自の個性的なモデルが世に多数送りだされた。たとえば1989年に登場したBMW ALPINA B10 Bi-Turboは、当時、世界最速のセダンだった。また、1993年には「ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC」を発表。ステアリング・ホイールのボタンで、オートマチック・トランスミッションをマニュアル・シフト可能とした画期的なシステムだった。
アルピナは、チューニングメーカーの域を超えた企業だ。資料には「1983年 連邦自動車交通局に自動車製造業者として登録」と、記されているから、あくまでひとつの自動車メーカーであるのだ。
