タツノオトシゴ “ヒメタツ”が泳ぐ海 再生した「水俣」の今
ハート型をつくるように身を寄せ合う、タツノオトシゴの仲間“ヒメタツ”。イソギンチャクに隠れるカサゴ。太陽の光が差し込む、透き通った海。
「公害の原点」と言われる水俣病の公式確認から5月1日で69年となる中、長い年月をかけて再生した、水俣の海の今の姿を知ってもらおうという取り組みが行われています。

「慰霊式が行われる一帯、実は埋立地です。かつて海を汚した有機水銀を含む泥、処分された魚たちが、この地中深くに閉じ込められました」
工場排水に含まれていた有機水銀によって引き起こされた水俣病。その後、海の一部が埋め立てられたほか、湾の入り口に網が設置され、汚染された魚やヘドロが取り除かれました。

熊本県は水俣湾の魚について、1997年に安全を宣言。漁は再開されました。毎年行われている魚の水銀濃度の調査でも国の暫定的な規制値を下回り続けています。

水俣市出身の森下誠さん（55）は、ダイビングガイドとして水俣の海の今の姿を伝えています。この日は、広島県から4人が訪れました。
森下さんは海に入る際に、慰霊碑へ案内することにしています。

「象徴的な場所でもあります。水俣の海が今どうなっているか、いちばん見てほしい場所です」

「透明度もよくて、すごくきれいでした。ここに向かう車の中で、水俣の勉強をしながら来ました。海に入ることに最初は心配もありましたが、安全に生き物が生息できる海になっていると感じ、イメージが変わりました」
地元でとれた海の幸を楽しんでもらおうと、夜は居酒屋に案内しています。
森下さんには小学生のときの忘れられない記憶があります。

「修学旅行で県外に行ったんですけど『水俣から来た、水俣病』って言われて。悲しい思い、悔しい思いをしたことは今でも覚えています」
「ヒメタツ」に希望を乗せて
森下さんが今、水俣の海のシンボルとして願いを託すのが、タツノオトシゴの仲間“ヒメタツ”です。
出産の様子などを間近で見られる場所は珍しいといいます。
このヒメタツをきっかけに、子どもたちにもよみがえった海を知ってもらいたいと、小学校での特別授業を続けています。

「子どもたちはふるさとの海に自慢できるものができて、すごく喜んでくれました。私ができなかった部分なんですが、自分の出身地に引け目や負い目を感じることなく、今の海はこんなにきれいなんですよと、いろんなところで話してくれたらうれしいです」
