au Starlink Direct、iPhoneもデータ通信に対応
KDDIは、衛星とスマートフォンの直接通信サービス「au Starlink Direct」において、データ通信ができる対象機種にiPhoneシリーズを追加した。

「au Starlink Direct」は、空が見えれば圏外エリアでも通信できる、衛星とスマートフォンの直接通信サービス。米SpaceXが構築する衛星網「Starlink」を利用する。8月28日からはデータ通信が利用できるようになり、スマートフォンOSに用意されている「衛星モード」に対応した、登山や天気などの一部のアプリがデータ通信を利用できるようになっていた。
このデータ通信の機能はAndroidスマートフォンの一部機種から対応が開始されていたが、今回iPhoneシリーズでも利用できるようになった。
対応機種は、iPhone 13～17シリーズ、iPhone Airを含む合計21機種。
iPhoneシリーズでは、まずは圏外エリアで特に役立つアプリとして、文字や画像などをやり取りできる「メッセージ」、現在地確認や経路案内ができる「マップ」、気象情報を確認できる「天気」など、Apple製の5つのアプリが対応。加えて、リアルタイムに情報確認や投稿ができる「X」、防災情報を受信できる「特務機関NERV防災」、登山情報を確認できる「YAMAP」「ヤマレコ」などが利用できるようになる。iOSの対応アプリは22種類で、一部は10月下旬以降に対応予定。
アプリ開発者向けサポートサイトも開設され、今後も対応アプリの拡大を推進していく。
