新型ジープ アベンジャー アメリカとヨーロッパの融合作品だ!!! 日本にピッタリなコンパクトSUVに迫る
ジープのコンパクトSUVである新型「アベンジャー」は、アメリカとヨーロッパが融合した魅力的な1台だった！ サトータケシがリポートする。

スティングが歌った『イングリッシュマン・イン・ニューヨーク』、『巴里のアメリカ人』は1951年公開のミュージカル映画、そしてこのジープ アベンジャーはさしずめ「ヨーロッパ生まれのアメリカ車」といったところだ。
というのも、BEV（バッテリー式電気自動車）の基本骨格はステランティスに統合される前のグループPSAが開発したもので、同じくステランティス傘下のフィアット「600e」と共通、生産はフィアットが建設したポーランドの工場で行われるからだ。自動車メーカーの合従連衡の結果、こうした背景を持つジープ アベンジャーが生まれた。
アメリカ生まれのジープブランドをヨーロッパに広めるという役割を担っているのがジープ アベンジャーであり、権威あるヨーロッパ カー オブ ザ イヤー2023を受賞したことで、ある程度の目的は達成されたといえるだろう。
はたしてステアリングホイールを握ってみると、外観は“ベイビー ジープ”でありながら、このクルマはヨーロッパのコンパクトカーを思わせるフィーリングを伝えた。
ヨーロッパ車っぽさを感じる第一の理由は、ソールの薄いスニーカーを履いているかのような、カツンカツンという軽快な乗り心地。極低回転域から豊かなトルクを発生するモーターが車体をすいすいと引っ張ることもあって、都心部を軽やかに走る。後で車検証を確認すると、車重が1570kgあることに驚かされた。体感としては1200kgぐらいに感じる。
市街地から高速道路に入り、速度が上がると軽快だった乗り心地が、フラットな姿勢を保つものに変わっていく。速度が上がるほどに落ち着くあたりも、ヨーロッパ車っぽい。
曲がりくねった道で速度を上げたときに感じるステアリングホイールのがっしりとした剛性感、路面からのインフォメーションをしっかりと伝えるステアリングフィールも、よくできた欧州小型車を思わせる。
試乗したアベンジャー アルティテュードの全長は、トヨタの「ヤリス クロス」より少し短い4105mm。
都心ではやはりこれくらいのサイズ感が扱いやすく、繁華街のコインパーキングなどでも、躊躇することなく車体をねじ込める。
