ヴェルディに訊く、パティーナ大阪でやりたかったこと
「ストリートカルチャーとラグジュアリーの融合」を提案するホテル「パティーナ大阪」がオープン。クリエイティブ・パートナーとしてプロジェクトに参画したVERDYが、大阪に新たなシーンを創出する。

──パティーナ大阪の“クリエイティブ・パートナー”に就いた経緯は？
VERDY 最初はTシャツなどのグッズデザインでのコラボレーションという形でオファーをいただいたんですが、自分としては、モノを作って売って終わるだけでは面白くないし、そうした取り組みは他のホテルからのオファーもこれまでに何件かありました。また、自分の地元である大阪に帰るたび、いろいろなホテルに泊まっているのですが、自分が本当に泊まりたいホテルというのがなかったんです。なので、パティーナ大阪には、グッズデザインだけでなく、空間のキュレーションを含めたコンセプトメイキングから関わりたいと伝えました。それが“クリエイティブ・パートナー”という形で実現したんです。なので、いわゆる“デザイン”というよりは、ホテルを象徴する体験のプロデュースに関わっていると言えます。
──実際にこのパティーナ大阪のプロジェクトを進める中で、どのような手応えを感じますか？
VERDY パティーナ大阪のスタッフや関係者は、皆すごくオープンで、自分が出したアイデアに「それ、いいね！」という感じで喜んでくれました。また、自分はシンガポールのカペラやモルディブのパティーナにも宿泊したことがあるんですが、どちらもとても良い経験で、それを自分の地元である大阪でも得られるようになる──しかも、そこに自分自身が関わっていくというのは、とてもワクワクします。ちなみにモルディブのパティーナではHenry’s PIZZAのポップアップも実施しました。
──VERDYさんをクリエイティブ・パートナーに迎えるにあたり、パティーナ大阪は「ストリートカルチャーとトランスフォーマティブ・ラグジュアリーの融合」というコンセプトを掲げています
VERDY そもそも、自分の活動自体がストリートカルチャーだと思っているので、パティーナ大阪のようなラグジュアリーホテルと自分が何かアイテムを作るだけでも、それは「ストリートとラグジュアリーの融合」になるのだと思います。
また、今回のパティーナ大阪とのプロジェクトでは、“サステナブル”であることも意識しています。これは、今までも気にはなっていたけれど、本格的に取り組んだことはなかったので、自分にとって新しい試みですね。なので、アイテムを一つ作るにも「サステナブルな素材を使えないか」といったことを話し合いながら進めています。それに、パティーナは元々アートやカルチャーへのアプローチが得意で、例えばモルディブのパティーナにはジェームズ・タレルのインスタレーションが設置されていて、宿泊者は無料で体験できるんです。そして、大阪にはデヴォン・ターンブル──Supremeの店舗に設置されたスピーカーやNIGOさんとモンクレールがコラボレートしたメルセデスGクラスのサウンドシステムを手がけたことで知られる──が作るスピーカー「OJAS」のサウンドシステムによるリスニングルームができる予定で、自分もすごく楽しみにしています。だから、ただラグジュアリーというだけではなく、そうしたアートやカルチャーとの関わりもあって、凄くカッコいいホテルなんです。けれど、日本では、まだそれほど知られていないので、特に大阪の人たちに素晴らしいものが地元にできたんだということを紹介できればいいなと思っています。そして、大阪にやって来る人たちに向けて、パティーナ大阪を通じて、大阪のアートやカルチャーを発信できる場にしていきたいんです。
──また、パディーナ大阪はVERDYさんがオーナー兼ディレクターの「Henry's PIZZA」のすぐ近くに建設されました。
VERDY 2年前に「Henry's PIZZA」がオープンしたときから「近くにいいホテルができるらしい」という話を聞いていて、いつできるんだろうと楽しみにしていたんです。そうしたら、そのホテルが、このホテルだった。だから、パティーナ大阪からオファーが来なかったとしても、こっちから「近いし、何か一緒にやりませんか？」って、逆にオファーしていたかもしれません（笑）。Henry's PIZZAを作る時は、あえて何もない場所を選んだんです。大阪を離れて久しい自分が、アメ村や堀江のようにカルチャーがすでに出来上がっているところに、後から割り込んでいくのは良くないと思って。それに、Henry's PIZZAって、1、2階がピザ屋で、その上にギャラリーやポップアップスペースがあるというビル一棟で完結するような構成にしているので、何かの“ついで”ではなく、Henry's PIZZAの世界観を味わうためだけに来てほしい。Henry's PIZZAを中心に大阪のカルチャー、アートの新しいコミュニティやシーンができればいいなと思っています。
──パティーナ大阪も、VERDYさんが仕掛ける、“新しい大阪”のシーンに加わるわけですね
VERDY そうですね。東京に比べると、大阪はまだそれほど海外からの人が多くないと思います。でも、今、大阪が盛り上がってきているので、世界中を旅してきた自分が見つけた大阪のアートやカルチャーの面白さを、パティーナ大阪を通じて海外の人たちにも伝えていきたいですね。
