「奈良監獄ミュージアム」26年4月開館 五大監獄で唯一現存
星野リゾートが重要文化財「旧奈良監獄」の保存活用事業として整備を進めている「奈良監獄ミュージアム」が、2026年4月27日に開館する。旧奈良監獄を活用したホテル「星のや奈良監獄」も2026年に開業予定。

旧奈良監獄は、明治政府によって計画された五大監獄のうち、唯一現存する建築物。奈良監獄ミュージアムでは、歴史的建造物の保存を担うとともに、建築美や歴史的価値を未来へと継承していくための拠点となることを目指す。所在地は奈良県奈良市般若寺町(はんにゃじちょう)18。奈良以外の明治五大監獄は「長崎監獄」「金沢監獄」「千葉監獄」「鹿児島監獄」。
旧奈良監獄は、1908年(明治41年)に近代化を目指した国の一大プロジェクトとして誕生した。設計者は、数多くの裁判所や監獄の建設に関与した山下啓次郎氏。1946年(昭和21年)には「奈良少年刑務所」と改名し、社会復帰と更生教育を重視する矯正施設となった。その後、歴史的価値と美しい建築の意匠が評価され、2017年(平成29年)に国の重要文化財に指定された。
旧奈良監獄の最大の特徴は、西洋の装飾様式を取り入れた建築。敷地内の赤レンガは当時の被収容者が刑務作業の一環として職人とともに作り上げ、室内は天井から光を取り入れた明るい空間で人権に配慮したデザインとなっている。
ミュージアムのコンセプトは「美しき監獄からの問いかけ」。明治時代における近代化の背景と美しい建築とともに、監獄という「規律」が支配する空間での「問いかけ」を受けて、自由について考えを巡らす体験を提供したいという思いを込めた。
ミュージアム内は、「歴史と建築」「身体と心」「監獄と社会」の3つのテーマを設定した展示棟を巡る構成。
「歴史と建築」のA棟は、赤レンガに刻まれた記憶に思いを馳せ、日本の行刑や奈良監獄の建築的特徴を知るエリアに設定されている。
「身体と心」のB棟では、被収容者の視点で刑務所での生活やルールを紹介。規律に縛られた刑務所の生活を知り、想像し、客観的に見つめることで、自分自身の生き方に通じる「問い」に迫るとしている。
「監獄と社会」のC棟は、監獄をさまざまな価値観や切り口で表現するエリア。開館時には、国内外で活動するアーティストが、監獄から受けたインスピレーションとそれぞれの感性で制作した作品を展開する予定。
カフェやショップも設置。カフェでは、明治時代の洋食文化を反映したオリジナルのカレーパンやチーズケーキ、ご当地ソーダ等を提供する。ショップではオリジナルグッズを取り扱うほか、全国の刑務所で作られた刑務所作業品のギャラリーを併設し、販売する。
アートディレクターとして佐藤卓氏、スーパーバイザーとしてAdrien Gardère(アドリアン ガルデール)氏を招聘。星野リゾート初のミュージアム事業の展開であり、監獄というテーマを深く掘り下げる施設でもあることから、世界で活躍するクリエーターに監修、アートディレクションを依頼したという。
佐藤卓氏は「ロッテ キシリトールガム」「明治おいしい牛乳」のパッケージデザインをはじめ、ポスターなどのグラフィック、商品や施設のブランディング、企業のCIを中心に活動。NHK E テレ「デザインあ」「デザインあneo」の総合指導、21_21 DESIGN SIGHT ディレクター兼館長、京都芸術大学学長を務める。
アドリアン ガルデール氏は、トロントのアガ・カーンミュージアム(設計：槇文彦氏)、ルーヴル美術館ランス別館(設計：SANAA)、ロンドンのロイヤル・アカデミー(設計：デヴィッド・チッパーフィールド氏)など、世界13カ所以上の美術館の常設展示デザインを手がける。
料金は大人2,500円～、チケット販売開始は26年2月予定。開館時間は9時～17時(最終入館16時)、定休日はなし(メンテナンス休館あり)。アクセスは近鉄奈良駅からバスで約13分、「般若寺」バス停下車徒歩約5分。奈良監獄ミュージアムの保存棟および展示エリアの建築面積は1,860m2、延床面積は2,463m2。
■ ミュージアムを皮切りに奈良県内に3施設
星野リゾートはミュージアムのほか、旧奈良監獄を活用したラグジュアリーホテル「星のや奈良監獄」を2026年に開業予定。ミュージアム、ホテルを含めた敷地面積は100,478.80m2となる。
星野リゾートと旧奈良監獄保存活用株式会社による協定書の締結に基づき、旧奈良監獄の赤れんが建造物の魅力を最大限に活かした空間で、非日常かつラグジュアリーな滞在を提供するとしている。客室数は48室。
そのほか奈良県内では、日本初の宮都があった明日香村に、「星のや飛鳥」を2027年に開業する計画を進めている。明日香村西部の谷あいに位置し、村のまちなみ風景を踏襲した低層の分棟型客室を整備。飛鳥時代に仏教とともに伝わった瓦屋根、敷地の中心に設ける棚田をイメージした庭を特徴としている。
所在地は奈良県高市郡明日香村大字真弓979-1他。建築面積は5,294.69m2、延床面積は5,501.28m2、敷地面積は49,997.48m2、客室数は35室。
星野リゾートは、万博開催により国内外から関西が高い注目を浴びる中、観光地の一極集中という課題の緩和を目指し、奈良県を関西観光の選択肢として提案する。
